trane heat pump

You can create a comfortable, "energy smart" home by installing a powerful and efficient heat pump system. To save the most money on your monthly energy bills, and to achieve the best comfort for your family, you will need to choose wisely. The keys to choosing the right heat pump for your home are the type, size, and efficiency rating of the equipment, plus your HVAC company.

1. Choosing the Right Type

There are three basic types of heat pumps. Air-source heat pumps are the most common, and they are usually the right choice for upgrading existing homes in the Raleigh NC area. If you currently have a forced-air furnace they are relatively easy to install and maintain. These highly efficient systems can reduce your energy bills by up to 50% compared to gas or oil furnaces.

For many small homes, garages, additions and other dwellings without a system of ducts, you should consider a split ductless heat pump (sometimes called a mini-split).

They third type is geothermal. These heat pumps are practical for new construction where you have a large lot, or when you need to heat and cool a large area.

2. Choosing the Right Size

Correct heat pump sizing is very important. For example, selecting a system that is too small could result in excessively long run times and reduced heating capacity for cold winter weather. And a system that is too large will not run long enough to properly control indoor humidity. Scott Comfort Systems' experts know how to properly size your new system, and they will explain your options to you in terms that you can understand.

3. Choosing the Right Energy Efficiency

When buying a heat pump keep an eye on the efficiency ratings. The SEER2 rating applies to cooling efficiency, and HSPF2 applies to heating. The higher these numbers, the greater the efficiency.

Choosing the energy efficiency rating for your new heat pump system comes down to an economic decision. Heat pumps with higher SEER2/HSPF2 ratings cost more to install, but they also give you lower monthly operating costs. Systems with lower SEER2/HSPF2 numbers are the opposite: less expensive to install but more expensive to operate.

And don't forget to look into possible rebates from the government and your electric utility company. Rebates are generally offered only when you install a higher efficiency system.

4. Choosing the Right HVAC Company

Scott Comfort Systems' technicians have many years of experience installing and maintaining heat pumps in the Raleigh area. They will evaluate your home and give you their best recommendations for the right heat pump system for you. Call today for your free in-home estimate.
